Called to Battle: Discovering Your Destiny in God

Writer: Robin BertramRobin Bertram

From the very beginning, humanity has been engaged in a spiritual battle. The war between darkness and light is not just a theme in scripture—it is a reality in our lives. When we look at the life of Gideon, we see how God takes weak people in difficult situations and transforms them for His glory.

Like Gideon, we are called into battle. But will we answer the call?

1. The Battle is Spiritual

From the fall of man, God declared war against the enemy:

“I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shall bruise his heel.”—Genesis 3:15

Israel faced a physical battle, but the root was spiritual. The Midianites had ravaged the land for seven years, leaving Israel impoverished, fearful, and hiding in the mountains. Many of us have faced seasons like this—where the enemy seems overwhelming, and hope feels distant.

Yet, even in those dark times, God is preparing His warriors.

2. The Call to Battle

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he wasn’t in a stronghold—he was hiding. And yet, God’s message to him was clear:

“Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian; I hereby commission you.”—Judges 6:14

God calls us where we are, but He doesn’t leave us there. He sees beyond our fear, insecurity, and hiding places. I asked the Lord why He wanted me to teach on Gideon, and He answered, “Because you have lived it.” Maybe you, too, have been called into a battle that seems too big for you.

3. The Character of a Warrior

Gideon’s first reaction wasn’t boldness—it was doubt. He said:

“But sir, how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”—Judges 6:15

Have you ever asked yourself these questions?

  • Who am I to take on such a battle?

  • I don’t have the strength, credentials, or experience.

  • Why is this happening to me, God?

Despite his fear, Gideon obeyed. Even mighty warriors experience fear, but fear should never stop us from moving forward.

4. The Transformation of Gideon

The turning point in Gideon’s life was not when the battle was won, but when he received a new name and identity.

“The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.’”—Judges 6:12

God did not call Gideon according to his present circumstances but according to his destiny. I experienced this firsthand at a women’s retreat. The Lord changed my name—He called me warrior. Later, by the waterfront, He confirmed it again with the name Gideon.

What name is God giving you today? Are you willing to receive it?

5. Victory in Battle

Gideon still faced doubt, so God reassured him with a dream overheard in the enemy’s camp. Encouraged, Gideon obeyed—and with only 300 men, God gave Israel victory.

“The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!”—Judges 7:20

Even in our weakest moments, God fights for us. He equips us not with numbers or strength but with faith and obedience.

Are You Ready to Step Into Your Calling?

The enemy wants to keep you hiding, doubting, and afraid. But God is calling you mighty warrior. The battle may be real, but so is the victory.

Will you answer the call?
